Water conservation Tips and Golf Course designFaldo Golf Design and Water conservation

Living-Water’s longstanding client, Nick Faldo Golf Design, has built or is building golf courses all around the world, from Cambodia, Iceland, Dominican Republic, China and most recently Argentina.

When designing golf courses water conservation and water retention takes on a particularly important role, as golf courses currently even spring up in the dessert.  For Nick Faldo Golf Design, no where has this more pertinent than on the island of Cyprus.

Cyprus is hot and sunny for most of the year, and as a result, water is a precious commodity. Together, Faldo Design and its contractors Southern Golf, created a golf course which perfectly combines visual perfection with the island’s ever present need to conserve water. This is water usage than could be a case study for others to follow.

The Cyprus golf course now has lush fairways which smoothly blend into desert-style rough areas (conserving water) with striking limestone formations, and mature carob groves“. I for one cant wait for an excuse to get out to Cyprus and play this course for real.  It is reputedly a superbly designed and executed golf course which creates an intriguing playing experience which golfers even at my level will enjoy over and over.

Even in America water conservation remains a key element in golf design. The Rock golf course, another Faldo Golf Design in Ontario, draws on the incredible drama of Muskoka’s natural wilderness and majestic outcrops of granite. It’s a spectacular 6,650 yard, par 71 championship course that can be enjoyed spring, summer and especially in autumn.

The course and resort have established themselves as one of the premier resort destinations in Ontario. The Rock achieved Audubon Certification in 2008.

In order to achieve Audubon Certification, a golf facility is required to demonstrate that it is maintaining the highest degree of environmental quality in several areas including Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management.

So a big well done to Faldo Golf Design, on achieving the very demanding Audubon Certification – it just goes to show that golf course design does not have to deplete water tables when properly designed.
