Water is so important to every living, breathing creature on earth that without it we would die. Our bodies consist of around 70% water and we have to maintain this balance, replacing the fluids that we lose through various bodily functions by drinking water regularly.
So, if our bodies are so full of water, and we would die without water, where does all this water come from and will it not just dry up one day? Water is to be found everywhere in nature, like in oceans (although one cannot drink this water), in rivers, lakes, dams, and springs, as well as in the air and underground.
Even though we have floods and famines, and we constantly hear about global warming, the water on earth will never dry up completely. In actual fact, there is the same amount of water on earth today as there was when earth was first formed. The water is recycled, coming up from underground or falling from the skies, used for various purposes, and sinks back into the earth or is taken back up into the sky to fall as rain somewhere else again.
The water that we use as drinking water and for other domestic, agricultural and industrial uses is sourced from nature and treated to remove toxins so that it is not harmful to us.
Interesting Water Locations in Nature
When we think about water in nature, most of us think about our local rivers, lakes and oceans, but there are various water locations about which there are some very interesting legends:
Aegean Sea
According to legend, the Aegean Sea was named after the Greek king, Aegeus, who married secretly and had a son named Theseus, whom an oracle predicted would be the death of Aegeus. Legend has it that Theseus became a great adventurer and killer of the half-man, half-bull Minotaur in the labyrinth of king Minos. Unfortunately, at the end of his travels his ship sailed into Athens under black sails instead of white, which led his father to believe he was dead, at which he threw himself off a cliff into what was thereafter named the Aegean Sea, fulfilling the oracle’s prophecy.
Atlantis
Atlantis is rumoured to have been an island, thought to have been located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean between Africa and America. Plato stated that Atlantis had possessed a naval power that had conquered many lands, including Africa and parts of Western Europe, but which had sunk into the sea due to a natural disaster. Atlanteans were thought to have been a very advanced, highly culturally developed civilisation that powered their ships and machinery with power gleaned from crystals. Explorers still search for the lost city today, hoping to discover its remains.
Avalon
Avalon is another island that is believed to have existed and then vanished, although its location was supposedly off the coast of Britain. It has been linked to a visit by Jesus and Joseph of Arimathea, and said to be the home of the Lady of the Lake from Arthurian legend. King Arthur is said to be buried there and it is rumoured to be the birthplace of Tristan, from the legend of Tristan and Isolde.
Bermuda
Bermuda is probably one of the most famous water locations due to the triangular-shaped area between Bermuda, Puerto Rico and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, known as the Bermuda Triangle. It is said that many ships and aircraft just disappeared after entering this mysterious location, the most famous of which is Flight 19, a naval air force squadron that supposedly just disappeared into thin air while flying over the Bermuda Triangle.
Formosa
Formosa is a five million square kilometre area in the Pacific Ocean that has also had mysterious disappearances akin to those experienced in Bermuda, and thus the Formosa Triangle has a similar reputation.
Lemuria
Lemuria is another hypothetical lost continent, rumoured to have existed in either the Pacific or Indian Ocean and believed by Darwinian scientists to the fossil records about the origins of the human species, known as the missing link. Some believe that the island never existed, while others have postulated that Lemurians turned to black magic, causing the island to be sunk by the gods prior to creating a new race on the island of Atlantis.
Mu was another continent supposedly located in the Pacific Ocean that sunk to the ocean floor, as was a city called Ys which was flooded and disappeared below sea level. The Underworld, a mythological realm of the god/goddess of the dead, was separated from the world of the living by five rivers, including in the River Styx into which Achilles was dipped by his mother.
