Many individuals do not believe that there is such a thing as climate change, but there is, and climate change is killing land and sea animals. Climate change is affecting humans mainly because it is affecting the vital water that we need for survival; both the water resources and the quality of the water that we use for drinking, personal hygiene and more.
Climate Change is Killing Land and Sea Animals
Humans need to own the fact that there is such a thing as climate change and that it is mostly our fault that it is happening. We need to stop burying our heads in the sand like ostriches and realise that climate change is affecting those who cannot speak for themselves, earth’s animals of all sizes and shapes.
Alpine Chamois goats
Research by Durham University on Alpine Chamois goats over the past thirty years has shown that climate change has affected the size of the goats; they are now 25% smaller in size than those in the 1980s. Researchers have concluded that this is mainly due to the fact that their habitat is 3-4 degrees (Celsius) warmer. Although this change in climate has not affected their food source, it has affected their behaviour. Due to the hotter weather, they are lounging around and resting more, therefore grazing less. This change in size is dangerous for their continued existence as it is their original size that helped them survive the freezing winters.
Sea Turtles
Climate change is affecting 6 already endangered species of sea turtles. The increase in sea levels is eroding the beaches where they lay their eggs. The warmer weather may also be making the sand too hot to incubate the eggs, and this is a huge problem as it is the temperature of the sand that determines the gender of the turtle. Warm sand produces females, and in the Loggerhead turtle species, this is already a problem as 90% of the population is already female. With no males with which to reproduce, this species will soon be extinct.
Lobsters
To most individuals lobster look tough and resilient, but they are being affected adversely by climate change. Lobsters are cold-blooded animals, which means that they flourish in cooler temperatures. With climate change warming both the air and the water on earth, lobsters are struggling to just breathe, creating physiological stress. So much energy is spent on just surviving that searching for food and reproducing are not priorities. Lobsters are an endangered species due to climate change.
The above are just some of the dangers that climate change poses, but there are many more. Climate change affects air and water, both of which are vital to life on earth; we need to do something about it.
