Although governments throughout the world, including the UK government either add fluoride to their tap water or are contemplating doing it, research that goes as far back as 2001 warns of the increased risks of bone cancer in young boys.
Elise Bassin, DDS, completed a study for her doctoral dissertation at Harvard in 2001. This study was published in Cancer Causes and Control, a peer-reviewed medical journal published by Springer Science& Business Media, covering research on the epidemiology, causes, and control of cancer.
Bassin’s study revealed that boys who grew up in areas where fluoride was added to the drinking water were more likely to get osteosarcoma (a bone cancer) than those who did not. This risk was heightened in boys of 6-8 years of age, which is a time of major growth. The mortality rate in those with osteosarcoma within the first five years is about 50%. Nearly all survivors have had one or more limbs amputated, usually their legs.
Bassin, who has a background in dental health was surprised at the results of the study, as all that she had be taught before pointed to the fact that fluoride added to the water at recommended levels for the prevention of dental cavities is safe and effective.
In the UK, The Department of Health maintains that fluoride is safe, and it is added to tap water on the advice of the British Dental Association. About 50% of the fluoride ingested remains in the body, in the pineal gland in the brain, in the teeth and in the bones.
Other studies that point to the same conclusion are:
- A 2006 study undertaken by the National Research Council, which concluded that “fluoride increases the rate of fracture at 4 ppm (the level currently considered “safe” by the EPA), and noted that fluoride may increase the fracture risk at levels lower than 4 ppm.â€
- Another study undertaken by the University of Iowa, completed in 2001 but not published until 2010, concluded that “there is clear evidence that the people with higher levels of fluoride in their skeleton had weaker bones, by several different measurements of bone quality.â€
The addition of fluoride to the drinking water in the UK is dangerous to the health of those between the ages of 6-8 years of age and also to the elderly, as the fluoride is a carcinogenic substance.
If you are living in an area where fluoride is added to the water, the best thing you can do for your health and that of your family is to invest in a water cooler. This way you will be sure that the water you are drinking is pure and does not contain toxic chemicals.
Living-Water, a top water company that services the Greater London area, offers both bottled water coolers and mains or POU water coolers that are plumbed into the main water line. The bottled water coolers contain spring water from source in the Wenlock range, and the mains water coolers can be fitted with a water filter that ensures that the water you are drinking is pure and free of toxic chemicals like fluoride.
Living-Water uses only the best materials to construct their top-of-the-range office water coolers and also offer a great delivery service for the bottled water coolers, which use 18.9l water bottles. All office water coolers undergo mandatory water cooler sanitisation checks as part of the standard delivery process.
Living-Water is an environmentally conscious water company and is a member of the Bottled Water Cooler Association (BWCA), an organisation that ensures that water companies adhere to ethical conduct and the highest standards in the bottling process.
