Why Do You Need Water In Your Body?You need to drink water; you need to stay hydrated; take water with you when you go hiking; make sure you drink enough water when doing sport…. Blah, Blah, Fish paste! I am so tired of hearing that I need to drink water that I can scream, and I am sure that you are too.

The only problem is that whoever is telling you that is 100% correct; the human body cannot function optimally without water. When we do not drink water regularly we can get dehydrated and that brings with it a whole host of mild as well as really nasty and dangerous symptoms.

Why Do You Need Water In Your Body?

We have different percentages of water in our bodies at different ages; effectively housing less water as we get older. Babies are 75 to 80% water; as adults we consist of around 70% water, and as we get older this drops to approximately 50 to 60% for women and 60 to 65% for men.

This water is spread around the human body in constant percentages:

  • Human bones contain between 31% water;
  • Kidneys contain around 79% water.
  • Muscles are 79% water; and
  • Our heart is around 73% water;
  • The human brain is 85% water;
  • The skin is 64% water;

When we do not drink water we become dehydrated, and this can lead to a dry mouth, thirst, flushed skin, difficulty in producing saliva, dark coloured urine, mild headache, chills, fatigue, dizziness, and reduced appetite. These are just the signs of mild dehydration – as the dehydration gets worse so do the effects, which include muscle spasms, vomiting, rapid pulse, dim vision or temporary blindness, confusion, respiratory depression, neuromuscular seizures, chest pain, and eventually one could fall into a coma and ultimately die.

Chemically, water consists of hydrogen and oxygen. Both of which have vital importance as vitalising properties and a maintaining force to our systems. Water, the universal solvent, forms weak bonds with the other molecules, and has a vital function in conducting the electricity that is required in the day to day operation of our bodies.

Brain neurons transmit messages and thoughts via electrochemical transmitters, for which drinking water is essential. Without drinking water our brains would not be able to function, which means that none of the other cells in the body would be able to do anything as they depend on the messages from the brain to tell them what to do. This is why, when one is brain-dead, one is really dead as opposed to not having a heartbeat… makes you think, doesn’t it?

Drinking water is also vital as it is one of the best fat reducers and diet aids. Drinking water regularly helps to:

  • Maintain muscle tone
  • Eliminate waste and toxins
  • Reduce fat deposits by helping to metabolise fat stored in the body
  • Reduce sodium build-up
  • Relieve fluid retention
  • Suppress the appetite

You also need to drink water regularly because water is one of the best cures for the most common ailments that befall us. Drinking water can help with alcohol dependency, allergies, asthma, back pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, colitis, depression, headaches, high blood pressure, lower neck pain, and more.

Water is also instrumental in helping digest the food that we eat so that it can be turned into energy. Once we have digested our food, it is converted into elementary substances that can pass through the cells of the small intestine then into the blood or lymph. These substances, in the form of nutrients, then travel via the blood stream or circulation to wherever they are needed.

If we do not drink water we will not be able to digest our food properly and this could lead to indigestion and worse. The body consist of 70 trillion cells, each of which requires water to function. Approximately 60% of the body’s total water content is contained in the intracellular compartment, and the balance is extracellular fluid.

The human body is very complex, and nobody understands it 100%, not even doctors and scientists, but one thing that it does not take a genius to understand is that without water the body cannot function. Drink water regularly and stay hydrated and this will go a long way towards keeping you healthy and able to perform optimally, including mentally, at all times.
