There are plenty of reasons contributing to poverty in Africa. One huge contributing factor is the lack of access to clean drinking water. Approximately 300 Million African people do not have access to safe drinking water, which raises immense concern.
The African Need – Water is Required for Humans to Survive
Over a million children die every year from diarrheal disease due to unsafe drinking water. Personal hygiene is very important. Imagine not being able to wash your hands on a regular basis. This is what is currently taking place all over Africa. Children cannot wash their hands, which causes countless germs are passed from their hands to their mouths.
Water is also essential for ecosystems to function harmoniously.
Many hours per day, are spent just walking to collect water. Woman and children bear the burden of traveling miles to gather water, to ensure survival.
Bouts of extreme weather effects countries all over the world, like Mozambique, which has been getting far too much rain. The enormous amount of flooding all over the country hasn’t improved the problem either. Water that stands, stagnates and becomes too dangerous to consume. The production of food has become a tremendous crisis. Areas that experience severe drought has an impact on Africa’s food security. Hunger and starvation are the result of crop failures.
The issue surrounding water scarcity in Africa, which is caused by drought, has led to some of the most extreme epidemics and illness-outbreaks in history.
Water is fundamental to livelihoods, as food supplies decrease, rains fail, crops wither, and people go hungry. People have their livelihoods affected by food and water getting more and more scarce.
Many organizations exist to help alleviate the suffering that is currently taking place in Africa. Funding goes to digging water holes and wells. Considering the ongoing crisis that Africa experience, people are prompted to support these organizations.
