Water pollution is threatening your health every day and even more so if you are living in a developing country. Even in developed countries though, you are not safe from the amount of toxins in your drinking water.
Agricultural runoff from concentrated animal feeding operations and large factory farms, improper disposal of pharmaceutical and recreational drugs, toxic runoff from industries, littering, toxic by-products from chemicals used in making water potable and more are polluting your drinking water every day.
Groundwater aquifers are being rapidly depleted, and according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), almost two billion people still do not have safe drinking water. Hundreds of thousands of individuals die from preventable water-related diseases every year, and unfortunately many of the water treatment plants are unable to filter out some of the worse pollutants.
Pollution not only affects the health of humans, but plants and animals on which we depend for our food supply as well, and this is leading to famine and sky-high food prices. Arsenic contamination in the South Asian water basin which should supply water to more than 750 million people, for instance, is so contaminated with excess salt and arsenic that it is not even usable for irrigation.
Fish are succumbing to cancer due to toxins in the environment, and cancer has become one of the leading causes of death in humans, who are at the top of the food chain.
According to Dr. Maria Neira, head of WHO’s public health department:
“Today, almost 2 billion people use a source of drinking water contaminated with faeces, putting them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio.
Contaminated drinking water is estimated to cause more than 500,000 diarrheal deaths each year and is a major factor in several neglected tropical diseases, including intestinal worms, schistosomiasis and trachoma.”
Do yourself a favour and invest in a water cooler with a good filter; it is the only way to ensure that the water that you and those close to you are drinking is 100% free of toxins.
