After Hurricane Maria hit between October and September 2017 classified as a category 5 underwater earthquake, Puerto Rico has been left with much hope in its darkest of hours. Causing more than a 100 fatalities and massive damage to the entire country, as well as the water system, there is an increasing health crisis that has left residents exposed to extremely contaminated and undrinkable water.

Environmentalists and health experts have made a mission of it to warn the residents of the country to avoid drinking the water in the damaged country at all costs. Doctors and specialised nurses have even travelled from afar to treat the country’s residents who have been severely affected by the water crisis.

Many people have lost faith that the country will ever be restored back to its original state and with a mere few passing months, rationalizing the current condition of the water supply have left people even more negative than ever before.

Restoring Puerto Rico and Bringing Hope Back to a Beautiful Country

Although Hurricane Maria was the worst event to take place on the island of Puerto Rico, at least 82% of the entire islands water meters has been activated. This, however, doesn’t mean much to its residents as many are still left without tap water or the idea that the water is unsafe to consume.

Although it’s not an ideal solution, the island has turned towards collecting water from mountain springs and creeks that run next to the roads, after which they boil the water before consuming it.

With more than 70% of water in homes and public settings being affected and not adhering to water standards according to the health act of U.S. law, it is understandable to think why so many have lost hope.

Apart from boiling water found in springs, many residents are also relying on bottled water to get them through the daily crisis.

Along with more illness passing through the island due to contaminated water, more organizations should work towards restoring this beautiful island. The future of Puerto Rico and its people depends on it.
