Ever thought what exactly the causes of water pollution are? While everybody knows the industrial sector plays one of the biggest roles in impacting, not only water but air, soil, temperatures and many other things too, there are also many other causes of water pollution. These causes are often not talked about as it is much easier for the public and most importantly the government, to brush the pollution-talk under the rug and simply blame it on an industry that “can’t help itâ€, the industrial sector.
If ever you thought that the industrial sector is the only cause of water pollution, there are many other causes you need to be aware of.
Raise Awareness. What Causes Water Pollution?
- Sewage and wastewater – Every day, we as humans perform daily activities such as washing the dishes, laundry, our cars, showering/ bathing, cooking and many other things. If you think about even larger institutions such as schools, hospitals and public gathering places such as malls, there is a lot of liquid waste that has to end up going somewhere, right? Well, in developed areas, wastewater is treated, cleaned and then dumped into a river or the sea. In less developed countries the same process occurs, except, this type of water is dumped into the sea without being treated which can cause a lot of diseases.
- Sceptic tanks – While every toilet is connected to a septic tank, which is located outside of the house, the toilets waste still has to go somewhere. Although there are biological processes set up to break the waste down, it is still prone to end up on soil near water bodies that can also cause illness.
- Atmospheric deposition – Known as the pollutant of water bodies, atmospheric deposition is caused by air pollution that transfers sulphur dioxide.
- Ocean and Marine dumping – This is an unnecessary act that is caused by dumping rubbish like plastic, paper, rubber and aluminium into the ocean. Something like paper takes 6 weeks to decompose while aluminium takes up to 200 years. Just imagine all the damage being done to sea life.
